A Research – Are Cell Phones “Health Hazard”?

Prof. Girish Kumar at IIT Mumbai has been doing research on Cell phone radiation from past few years and spreading awareness about side effects of cell phone on human body. We had chance to talk to Prof. Girish personally at IIT Techfest happened in early January-2011. Prof. Girish shared insights about his research with us. He says

“Cell phone tower radiation is comparable to microwave oven. Just like microwave cooks food, radiation coming from cell phone is cooking your blood and heating the brain”

Considering all the research and finding by Prof. Girish and others at various institution, it is highly likely that news headlines two years from now might say “Government imposes Statutory warning on cell phones”. The front page on the leading daily newspapers might report cell phones as hazardous materials, which shall be sold with a warning just like cigarettes.

Here is the detailed report prepared by Prof. Girish, which was sent to Secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DOT) in Dec 2010.

Majority of the cell towers are mounted near the residential and office buildings to provide good mobile phone coverage to the users. These cell towers radiate tens to hundreds of watts of microwave power (in India) 24×7. Radiation is comparable to a microwave oven with 500 watts of output power, in which food gets cooked in a few minutes. Moreover people living at a distance of tens of meters receive 10,000 to 10,00,000 times stronger signal than required for mobile communication. In India, crores of people reside within these high radiation zones.
